BEA 2008 Analysis
Written by Brandon Prebynski

I apologize for the delay of updating the webolia.com blog. Although not an excuse, quite a lot has been going on lately.

One event that did go over quite well was the BEA conference on April 16th through 19th.

As mentioned previously, the panel that I spoke on detailed various aspects of Facebook. Specifically, my 15 to 20 minutes of speaking time was spent specifying the ins-and-outs of Facebook as a development platform.

Our panel was the first panel of the day, and we had a nice turnout. Other members of the panel spoke about Facebook as a news source, Facebook’s impact on the political process, and Facebook’s privacy issues.

My portion highlighted the how-to's and advantages of using Facebook, and other social networks, as a means for corporations, educational institutions and other entities to leverage the power of a growing audience-base.

If you would like a digital copy of the presentation, please let me know, and I will so accommodate.

In 2007, I was at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show and was able to briefly take a look at what BEA was offering. This year, I spent the majority of my time at the BEA event while also taking a quick stroll through the NAB area. Coincidentally, the two events take place around the same time each year and are somewhat of a combined effort, so making it to both is not a difficult task.

I’m looking forward to future BEA and NAB events. Have a B-E-A-utiful day!

Flickr Adds Video Capabilities, Users Unhappy
Written by Brandon Prebynski

The popular Web 2.0 photo sharing web site Flickr is now dabbling in video capabilities.

This move is an attempt to compete with the leading video site of its kind, Google’s YouTube.

Flickr may be doing this as a result of its stock decrease which has occurred over the last two years.

Not all Flickr users are happy with the change. A couple of user-groups have popped up which are adamantly opposed to the change, to say the least. The reasoning for the revolt is because some of the users think that the Flickr community should have been consulted about the issue before a change as large as this took place.

The backlashing users do have a point. They generate the content for the site. From a user point of view, I would have also appreciated it if Flickr sought out my views on the issue. I suppose that is the nature of UGC sites. When users have the ability to run a site by making all the content for it, users will indeed expect their voice to be heard.

However, from Flickr’s standpoint, they are an organization which must succeed. If a change such as this is what it takes, then change must occur.
