Communicating with Email vs. Social Networks
Written by Brandon Prebynski

One topic receiving a lot of attention lately is the use of Email vs. Social Networks for personal and professional communication.

As of the current state of the Web, I believe that social networks will eventually overtake the role of email. In order for that to occur, however, a standard will have to be implemented among social networks in order to share data seamlessly and efficiently among social networks.

For some, social networks may seem as a somewhat “unprofessional” method of communication for a professional setting. However, let’s also remember that personalization and transparency are two key issues which aid in building brands online, and the degree to which companies are transparent is increasing. This is being done largely through social networks and social media marketing initiatives, such as blogs.

When I say that social networks will be used in place of email for online, corporate communication, I do not mean that Facebook or MySpace as we know them will be utilized.

The interface for such communication via a social network would probably exist within an online interface which is, most likely, yet to be developed. The target audience for such a network will have to begin as a service without a specific target audience or specifically for corporate communication, but more importantly, not targeted specifically to a college or younger demographic.

If a social networking standard is developed, the programming standard itself could be utilized without having to have any one specific brand or web site behind it. The development of such a system could be done in a manner which allows various social networks to talk to each other and exchange information.

With those factors in mind, the “personal” and “unprofessional” perceptions of social networks will become less of a negative issue and more of an expected aspect of online communication.

MediaPost's Email Insider Summit 2008 Analysis
Written by Brandon Prebynski
Saturday, 24 May 2008

I just returned from MediaPost’s Email Insider Summit. The event was quite worthwhile.

My role at the Email Insider Summit was speaking on the Keynote Panel: “Does Email Have a Future?” The panel took place on May 22nd.

From the MediaPost web site:

"At the Email Insider Summit, Brand Marketers and agency decision makers will come together in a tranquil setting to network, share ideas, discuss and debate technology, while working collaboratively to improve overall business of email marketing as well as their own email marketing efforts. The summit will include general sessions, keynote speakers, research presentations, workshops, etc. The summit will not be all work; you will experience fun activities that take advantage of the areas attractions."

Location: South Seas Resort, Captiva Island, Florida

Audience: Brand Marketers, Email Marketing Executives, Advertising Executives, and Marketing Managers.

Attendance: 150

Website: http://www.mediapost.com/emailinsidersummit/

The atmosphere for the panel was quite positive, and I think the panel went fairly well. Myself and the other members of the panel offered our ideas and opinions of the future of email.

Will email continue to exist? In what capacity? Will social networks impact the popular messaging method?

I would be more than happy to discuss this topic with those who are interested. Give me a call or shoot me an email, and we can chat.

Attendance at the event included included a couple hundred individuals from ExactTarget, Brandmail Solutions, Yesmail, iContact, Habeas, Premiere Global Services, Goodmail, StrongMail, Silverpop, Message Systems, ReturnPath, Avenenue A Razorfish, Datran Media, Facebook, National Geographic, CDC Games, and others.

The event took place May 21st through 24th. I met a lot of industry executives from the email world. The location was excellent. The accommodations were outstanding. Mediapost did an excellent job putting together this event!

Given the opportunity, I will attend this event in the future. Nice work MediaPost!
