Facebook is more than a database of user information. With its combination of so many Web 2.0 technologies, some corporate organizations are utilizing the social network for internal business processes, such as a corporate intranet. File sharing, contact information, messaging, and privacy are just a few of the reasons why this can work.
Serena Software is one such corporation taking part in the extended uses of Facebook. Current intranets tend to be expensive, stiff and hierarchical, and do not enable information to flow across informal organizational boundaries. Facebook is free to use and offers the ability to customize its capabilities with its development platform.
Bill Ives of FastForwardBlog.com said Serena established a private Facebook group for Serena employees, and they built a few simple custom Facebook apps to better enable intranet functions. Now they simply provide links through Facebook to documents stored securely behind their local firewall. Access is just as secure as any other method.
